US regulation M1858 canteen with intact strap and stopper. This is the classic pattern canteen that was the most widely carried during the American Civil War. Canteen measures 7 - 3/4” across retaining the original brown wool covering. The 3 sling loops, the spout, and stopper are all present. Pewter throat of spout is maker stamped "J.C. JOHNSON & CO. / Feb. 5. 65". Retains iron chain connecting the stopper ring, and the original woven cotton shoulder strap that bears stamp "T.S. BAYLOR / US INSPECTOR". Stencil to the front appears to be a regimental "91" marking that has an illegible stamp above it. CONDITION: Very good with all original hardware. Front wool panel has 1 small moth hole, and reverse has 7 scattered moth nips. Edge stitching is solid. A nice example.
