Classic example of a U.S. Model 1858 Artillery forage cap. Body of blue broadcloth, with period brass die struck crossed cannon insignia over a brass company designator "E" with a brass "1" above. Insignia appears to be Civil War period with small leather tabs holding brass in place with great age. Tarred leather visor and chin strap with general service eagle buttons to the side. Liner is of brown polished cotton liner with remnants of maker's label on the crown. Retains brown russet leather sweatband. CONDITION: Solid condition overall with a small restoration sewn 1/8" spot above the chinstrap, and 2 small sewn spots on the reverse that appear to be period done. Typical age commensurate wear.
