Court martial document dated 31 Aug 1780 for a hearing that took place at "West Colt's Neck" New Jersey. Research shows there were sporadic battles between Tories and Continental militia at the same place 30 days earlier. Document is signed by the commanding officer on the bottom "Stephen Fleming". Stephen Fleming of Monmouth County, New Jersey, was a Captain in Walton's Co. of New Jersey Militia, February 12, 1778. He was a prisoner of war according to the History of Monmouth County at some point in time in 1780. He was a signer of the Articles of Retaliation June 1779; a grand juror at the Court of Coyer and Terminer August 1779 and Nov 1782; a signer of a petition favoring quick division of prize money December 1779. He was captured in 1780 and in July sold produce to the Continental Army. September 1780, he signed a petition supporting retaliation. December 1781, he signed another petition for renewing the guard at Tom's River. May 1782, he and his brother James were indicted for a misdemeanor. Finally in June 1783, he opposed the return of Tories. Named are 4 other lieutenants and the parties accused. Would make for an interesting research project.
