Rare 14k gold and gold-quartz inlaid match safe, circa 1880. This exceptional example is likely by Shreve & Co., San Francisco, California. Top inlaid with white gold quartz. Front panel inlaid with a diamond shaped rose gold-quartz with four additional separate inlays in white gold-quartz. Rectangular panel on reverse inlaid with extremely rich white gold-quartz. All gold-quartz inlays are intact in wonderful condition with just a few sporadic hairline cracks. The entire body of this match safe is wonderfully hand engraved with floral and geometric designs. Underside striker-panel is hand engraved with a crosshatch pattern. Hinged lid is hand engraved in Old English with presentation monogram reading "H.C.R." to front, and "From E.C." to reverse. Height: 2 1/4". Width: 1 1/4". Thickness: 9/16". Gross weight: 46.9 grams. Unmarked.
