Standard configuration P.38 manufactured by Spreewerke in approximately 1942-1943. The left side of the slide is stamped "P.38" followed by Spreewerkes "cyq" code and the serial number. Right side of slide bears a Spreewerke "(Eagle) / 88" waffenamt on either side of an eagle firing proof. Metal components exhibit a blue finish, frame mounted with 2-piece grooved pressed resin grips. Matching numbers are present on the frame, slide, barrel, and locking block. This example is accompanied by a "joa/ 1943" (Carl Heinichen) marked brown leather holster that contains 1 additional magazine. Interior of holster bears a handwritten "Melges / 37594295" in pen, indicating capture by Wilbur E. Megles. CONDITION: Excellent, with metal components retaining the majority of their original blue finish, exhibiting some wear and thinning that is mainly concentrated on the grip strap, muzzle, and trigger, that shows through to gray patina. Bore is bright, exhibiting moderate pitting and retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips show a couple superficial marks from handling and storage, but are otherwise fine. Holster is very good, with the leather being malleable, and exhibiting a couple spots of light crazing and wear overall. A very attractive U.S.G.U. bringback Spreewerke P.38.
