This lock of hair is tied at one end with a small black ribbon and housed in an unassuming leatherette photographic case embossed with geometric and floral motifs. The case was intended for 2 images. An engraved portrait of Lincoln is mounted under glass and gilt brass mat at left. The lock of hair is preserved under the glass at right, inside a gilt brass mat embossed with the same motifs as that at left. This comes from the renowned collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer, whose vast holdings have been dispersed gradually by the family over the years since his death in 2007. Dr. Lattimer’s note with this piece includes our title for the lot and “No.2,” indicating it was the second of at least two Lincoln souvenir locks in the collection that were cut from the President’s head or given as keepsakes to well-wishers in the popular Victorian custom. That he acquired a lock cut from Lincoln’s head after death is not surprising, Dr. Lattimer was the author of “Lincoln and Kennedy: Medical and Ballistic Comparisons of their Assassinations.” His collection included not only numerous Lincoln items, but also pieces associated with John Wilkes Booth. The small card also bears his inked initials and a collection code or number: “JKL-82-90.” CONDITION: Excellent.
