Addressed to “Fellow Citizens of the Senate, and House of Representatives,” and referred to as the Seventh Annual or State of the Union Address. 7 pages. Complete. No printing or publishing information, but likely a government printing. A cautiously hopeful address dealing with foreign and domestic affairs. Among other topics, Washington discusses the end of Wayne’s campaign northwest of the Ohio River and stresses the need for treaties that are acceptable to both parties for a lasting peace and the need to suppress violence against Native Americans by frontier settlers. He also supports ratification of the Jay Treaty with Britain, resolving outstanding issues of the Revolutionary War and British interference on the frontier. He also alludes to the end of the Whiskey Rebellion: “It is a valuable ingredient in the general estimate of our welfare that the part of our country which was lately the scene of disorder and insurrection now enjoys the blessings of quiet and order. The misled have abandoned their errors, and pay the respect to our Constitution and laws which is due from good citizens to the public authorities of the society.” From the renowned collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer. CONDITION: Very good, but pages separated.
