Antique DuPont Powder Company color litho vertical format advertising calendar. Stapled calendar is original with last remaining tear sheet being November 1901. Calendar is made up of multiple vignettes painted by artist Edmund Osthaus, who came to Toledo in 1886 to head up the brand new Toledo Academy of Fine Arts. He was in his 30s in the 1890’s when Du Pont first commissioned him to create paintings of hunting dogs for advertisements for their new product, “smokeless” powder. Osthaus and Du Pont enjoyed a prolific association for about 20 years until around the time of World War I when Du Pont transitioned from manufacturing explosives to chemicals. Du Pont used Osthaus’s watercolor and oil paintings for postcards, signs, calendars, and reproductions that were displayed in hunting lodges and clubs across the country. This piece features hunters and dogs, sailors manning a 1lb deck gun, and Spanish American War soldiers with Colt "potato digger" machine guns. Tinned top and bottom bands intact. CONDITION: Strong, unfaded colors. Overall very good with typical age creasing near the top that has to be held in the right light to see. Some very light age toning speckled spots along edge margins. No repairs or restoration visible and should frame very nicely.
Item Dimensions: 30" x 15".
