Lot consists of: (A) High condition 2nd Model Maynard carbine. These were considered one of the best carbines of the war by the troopers in the field. Many were acquired by the 9th Pennsylvania, the 1st Wisconsin cavalry regiments, United States Marines aboard the USS Saratoga, and the United States Revenue Cutter Service. Barrel exhibits classic pinched blade front sight with a 3-leaf rear sight. Frame is factory stamped on the right side: "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALL" and "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27. 1851. / DEC. 6. 1859" on the left. Cartouched on the left side of wrist crisply "AFN" and "JM." Retains original saddle ring and bar on the left. (B) Regulation carbine cartridge pouch contractor stamped "J.I. PITTMAN." Retains original wood block insert and 14 original Maynard rimmed rounds. (C) Remington M1858 Army, Standard configuration, mechanically strong, good lockup. (D) Regulation M1860 Army holster. (E) Regulation Civil War pistol cartridge box contractor stamped "T.F. SHEPARD / US". Oral history from consignor states that this was entire lot was brought home from the Civil War by a relative that later died of his war related wounds. CONDITION: Maynard is excellent and exhibits 98% original blue finish with 98% case color on the frame. Wood is crisp with near perfect cartouches, and only the lightest of pressure marks. Mirror bright bore, mechanically fine, and appears to be unfired. Remington revolver shows heavy period use but is mechanically sound with a dark bore. Leather accoutrements show age commensurate wear, crazing and flaking with all being very solid.
