The French 1777 Corrected Year 9 was the quintessential musket of the Napoleonic war and saw widespread use. This example has the spring loaded front band and correctly profiled pan cover, but has been scrubbed of all markings, branded with "Essex Brigade / N.J." on left side of comb, under cheek cutout. Front strap replaced with an all brass version of French manufacture. Sling swivels on mid band and front of trigger guard, with a crudely incised "MM" in front of finial, with a more professionally stamped "M.M." behind barrel tang, probably initials. After the War of the Seventh Coalition, a number of these muskets were sold abroad, including to the United States and Mexico, no doubt this example was purchased at that time. CONDITION: Metal is essentially a rich brown patina throughout with some light peppering. Brass is a deep untouched dark golden color. Stock has some minor marks from handling and use, a couple of bug holes on right side of comb, but solid and strong. Brands clear. Mechanically fine, bore good with some areas of oxidation.
