Early production circa 1820s M1816 contract musket by M.T. Wickham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 42" bright finished barrel is marked near the breech with "US", "P", and "GF" proof and inspection marks, in addition to a "S.N.J" New Jersey ownership marking. Lock remains in its original flint configuration with most components marked with "4" assembly number. Early arched "M.T. WICKHAM / PHILA" lock marking. The full length low comb walnut stock bears a "V / GF" George Flegel inspector mark over a deeply stamped New Jersey "SNJ" stamp on the left flat. Additional "SUSSEX BRIGADE" stamps are found to the left of the trigger guard and near the toe, likely indicating ownership by the Sussex County, New Jersey militia. Standard iron mounts. Complete with period cleaning rod and wood muzzle cap. CONDITION: Very good overall, having been cleaned. Iron components display a silvery bronze patina with pinprick oxidation throughout. Stock has been refreshed with markings still largely legible. Crisp mechanics.
