This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/12/2023
Manufactured circa 1855-1857 by Massachusetts Arms Company, with reportedly only about 2000 manufactured for British use. Specifically, this carbine was made for use in the Crimean War, and according to popular theory, some of these carbines made for England ended up being sold as surplus to the US for use in the Civil War. Standard configuration throughout with British proofs on major parts and double broad arrow marking underneath rear sight on left side, denoting sale out of British service. Lock is marked with standard US manufacturer markings and has "(Crown) / VxR" cypher. Left side of stock near upper tang of buttplate is marked "U.S". Matching serial numbers observed on barrel and bottom of frame. CONDITION: Very good, with a slight majority of the blue turned a freckled brown patina with balance retaining original bluing with freckling throughout. Stock is excellent with light handling marks and 1 heavy dent on top edge near buttplate. Mechanically fine. Bore is bright with sharp rifling, probably unfired.
