Only an approximated 2,000 M1861 muskets were fit with Miller Conversion breeches by the Meridian Manufacturing Company between 1865 and 1867, with some limited known service in the Maryland and New York Militias. This example is built with an 1864 dated Parker Snow & Co. contract rifle musket, which otherwise remains in standard configuration. Metal components remain in-the-white with breech marked in 4 lines "W.H. & G.W. MILLER / PATENT MAY 23, 1865 / MERIDEN MANFG CO / MERIDEN, CONN". The full length walnut stock has been channeled behind the breech to load cartridges. Rifle is complete with a tulip head ramrod. CONDITION: Good. Metal components are bright with freckling throughout, and a few areas of cleaned, deeper oxidation. Stock shows some expected wear with a repair and cracking on the left flat. Lock bolts appear to be replacements. Bore retains well defined rifling. Mechanically fine.
