Features include a 33" round barrel in .58 caliber with 7 groove rifling, and brass blade front sight and standard rear sight. Brass mountings, steel ramrod with brass cupped tip, and walnut stock with patchbox (patchbox is empty), and US-marked buttplate. Fit with Grosz Alteration circa 1861 for the State of New York. In April of that year, the Federal Government issued 5000 M1841s to the state of New York, which contracted them out for modification to accept Collins & Co. sword bayonets by Remington. Collins & Company was only able to supply bayonets for about 3200 rifles, meaning that the remainder still needed alteration to accept a bayonet. New York contracted with Frederick H. Grosz of New York City to supply these, the alteration involved turning down the front diameter of the barrel, and the addition of a bayonet lug and new front sight. CONDITION: Very good, with barrel turned a cleaned speckled gray patina with barrel proofs difficult to read, and areas of oxidation. Stock shows scattered areas of heavy wear, especially near the barrel tang and lock area. The left side of the stock is initialed "H.S.". Mechanically fine. Bore is dark with visible rifling.
