A true oddity of the Civil War, the Lindsay double musket utilized superposed loads, a single auto selecting trigger, and 2 percussion hammers to fire 2 shots before reloading. Only 1,000 were produced to fulfill an 1863 contract, seeing limited use in the conflict due to their unusual and unsafe design. This example remains in standard military configuration with a bright finished 41" rifled .58 caliber barrel mounted with a 3 leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Breech marked "LINDSAY / PATEN'D. OCT. 9. 1860", with additional inspectors marks found throughout other components. The full length walnut stock bears 2 crisp "ADK" inspector cartouches for Albert D. King and is fit with standard bright iron mounts including 3 barrel bands, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" marked butt plate. Rifle is complete with a tulip head ram rod. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Metal remains largely bright with some areas taking on a bronze patina and a few darker spots of oxidation. Stock retains its sharp edges and nearly all of its original finish with only light impressions. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. A wonderful example of a scarce Civil War martial arm.
