For a similar example, see Figure 3.5 in "A Deadly Art: European Crossbows, 1250-1850" by Breiding. Measures approximately 31" across the prod and 31" again from front finial to butt. Prod with sculpted notches for bowstring, front sight with 2 threaded columns for mounting a front sight, traditionally would have been a thread-and-bead configuration; left column broken. Folding rear sight with 4 aperture holes for sighting. Classic stonebow cocking mechanism that rolls forward and then retracts to cock bowstring. Interesting urn finial projects from front, bolt on underside on front unscrews and allows prod to slide out, allowing for a compact package. Undecorated iron runners on side, checkered English straight grip. Trigger protected by a long tang guard with pineapple finial. Integral foregrip with a small silver plaque at bottom. CONDITION: Good, metal components an even mixture of dove grey and chocolate patina, with some areas of pockmarks, most visible near front sight. Mechanism works appropriately. Stock has numerous marks from handling and field use, as stonebows could be loaded with pellets or other small projectiles to hunt small game. Damage on right side of wrist near tang, appears to be heat related. Some other minor cracks near iron furniture, but solid overall.
