M1862 contract musket produced by Remington in 1863. Fit with a standard blued 33" rifled barrel in .58 caliber, marked at the breech with the date, "V / P" over eagle head proofs, and "STEEL R.K.". Barrel is mounted with a saber bayonet lug, in addition to a blade front sight, and 3-leaf military rear sight. The case hardened percussion lock is marked with a federal eagle over "U.S." and "REMINGTON'S / ILION, N.Y.", in addition to the date. Fit with a full length walnut stock marked on the left flat with script "HDJ" and "BH" cartouches. Mounts include a brass nose cap, 2 spring retained bands, 2-piece trigger guard, patch box retaining spare nipple, and "US" marked butt plate. Musket is complete with a tulip head ram rod and a saber bayonet with scabbard. CONDITION: Very fine for age. Barrel retains bountiful amounts of arsenal blue with some light thinning. Portions of case colors remain visible on the lock and hammer, with some light cleaned oxidation. Brass is bright but beginning to mellow. Stock shows some wear and impressions, remaining very good overall. Fine mirror bore and crisp mechanics. 1 lock screw is missing. Bayonet is good showing some light oxidation with the scabbard leather separated along the seam.
