The Crimea Medal is a campaign medal that was issued to officers and men of British land and naval units who fought in the Crimean War of 1854–56 against Russia. Crimea medals were issued unnamed but could be returned to the mint for naming. The returned medals were usually impressed with serif capitals, and this style is often termed and accepted as "officially impressed." The lot consists of: (A) Crimea Medal engraved with tall Roman capitals "PTE T. MECKLENBURGH. 12TH LANCS". Mecklenburgh does not immediately appear in the records and the medal displays the Sebastopol clasp. (B) Crimea Medal engraved with tall Roman capitals "5055 SERJT. P. DONOHOE. 9TH REGT.". Donohoe does not immediately appear in the records and the medal displays the Sebastopol clasp. (C) Crimea Medal impressed to "1964 ESSIX. GRIFFITH. 90. L.I.". Griffith does not immediately appear in the records and the medal displays the Sebastopol clasp. (D) Unnamed Crimea Medal with Azoff clasp. (E) Unnamed Crimea Medal with Balaklava clasp. (F) Unnamed Crimea Medal missing ribbon. (G) Miniature Crimea Medal. CONDITION: Medals exhibit varying patina and wear. Overall fair-very good.
