Sanctioned in 1869, the New Zealand War Medal was awarded to surviving officers and men who faced the enemy during the New Zealand Wars 1845-47 and 1860-66. Less than 300 medals were awarded to the RN and RM for the first war and slightly more than 900 medals were awarded for the second war. The medal features different reverses which correspond to the dates of the recipients services. The lot consists of: (A) New Zealand Medal impressed in Roman capitals to recipient "367 JAS BONNETT, 50TH QN'S OWN RGT." Records indicate this medal was awarded to Private James Bonnett, 50th (The Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot. The reverse features the typical slogan with wreath containing the dates "1863 to 1866". CONDITION: A tag is attached to the back of the ribbon with Bonnett's name. Very good overall. (B) New Zealand Medal impressed in serif capitals to recipient "J. MASSEY, NAPIER MILITIA." Massey does not immediately appear in the records. The reverse features the typical slogan and wreath with undated center. CONDITION: A tag is attached to the back of the ribbon with Massey's name. Very good overall.
