The Second China War Medal was issued to members of the British and Indian armies and Royal Navy who participated in the Second Opium War of 1857-1860. The lot consists of: (A) Second China War Medal impressed in Roman capitals "EDWD CHIVERS. AB. HMS. PRINCE ARTHUR. IN." Chivers does not immediately appear in the records. The medal displays the Taku Forts 1860 clasp, which sailors aboard the Prince Arthur were authorized to wear. (B) Second China War Medal impressed in Roman capitals "JOHN O'BRIEN". There are 10 John O'Brien's listed as recipients of the award. The medal displays the Fatshan 1857 clasp. (C) Second China War Medal impressed in Roman capitals "JOHN HUGHES, PETTY OFFr, H.M.S. MELVILLE". There are several "John Hughes" in the records. HMS Melville was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy and was present during the First Opium War. (D) Unnamed Second China War Medal with Fatshan 1857 and Canton 1857 clasps. (E) Unnamed Second China War Medal with Pekin 1860 and Taku Forts 1860 clasps. (F) Unnamed Second China War Medal with Canton 1857 clasp. CONDITION: Good overall, with some medals displaying a darker patina.
