Rolling Block single shot breech-loading rifle manufactured by Remington between 1914-1915 under contract for the French military, who required additional rifles chambered in 8mm Lebel for their second line troops, so that more Berthier and 1886 Lebel rifles could be sent to the front lines. The rear tang bears Remington's manufacturer information, with the top of the barrel being stamped "CAL. 8 M.M.". Top of receiver is marked "N" over the chamber area, indicating conversion to "Balle N" ammunition. Metal components are blued, with the buttstock, forend, and upper handguard comprised of solid wood. Nosecap features a provision for a sword type bayonet. Cleaning rod is not present. CONDITION: Metal components retain large amounts of their period arsenal applied blue finish, exhibiting areas of moderate surface oxidation, as well as areas of wear showing through to gray and brown patinas. Mirror bore, exhibiting sharp and well defined lands and grooves throughout. Wood furniture exhibits scattered nicks, marks, and impressions, but otherwise appears sturdy and serviceable. A nice example of a unique Rolling Block rifle variation.
