The Indian Mutiny Medal was instituted on August 18, 1858 for award to British and Indian troops who served in operations against the mutineers and who were engaged in final operations leading to the surrender of Lucknow and the clearing of the surrounding areas. The lot consists of (A) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals "SERJT JAS WHITEFIELD, ROYAL ENGRS". Original issue, as service numbers are not impressed on the original issue. Records indicate this medal was awarded to Sergeant James Whitefield, 21st Company Royal Engineers. According to included records, Robinson was authorized to wear the Central India clasp as this medal displays. CONDITION: A tag is attached to the back of the ribbon with Whitefield's name. Very good overall. (B) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals "J. SYKES, A. B, IN NL BDE H.M.P.V. CALCUTTA". Original issue without service number. Impression indicates this medal was awarded to Abel Seaman J. Sykes, Indian Naval Brigade H.M. Pendant Vessel Calcutta. This Brigade fought a 6 hours engagement and shelled the enemy out of their position below Fort Kallykunka. The medal displays the Relief of Lucknow clasp. Sykes does not immediately appear in the records. CONDITION: Very good overall. (C) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals "WM. BALDWIN, 7TH HUSRS". Original issue without service number. Records indicate this medal was awarded to William Baldwin, 7th Hussars. According to included records, Baldwin was authorized to wear the Lucknow clasp which this medal displays. CONDITION: A tag is attached to the back of the ribbon with Baldwin's name. Very good overall. (D) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals "EDWD BAILEY, ORD. SHANNON.". Original issue without service number. Records indicate this medal was awarded to Ordinary Seaman Edward Bailey, HMS Shannon. According to included records, Bailey was authorized to wear the Lucknow clasp, which this medal displays. CONDITION: Very good overall.
