The Baltic Medal is a campaign medal that was issued to officers and men of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Sappers and Miners who served between March 1854-August 1855 in the Baltic Sea operations against Russia in the Baltic theatre of the Crimean War. The medals were issued unnamed with the exception to the Royal Engineers which were impressed in Roman capitals. Many of the unnamed medals were privately engraved which is why they are mostly encountered with different fonts. The lot consists of: (A) Baltic Medal impressed with heavy square sans-serif capitals to "J. HARRIS PTE. R.M H.M.S CENTAUR". Harris does not immediately appear in the records, however the HMS Centaur was a wooden paddle frigate launched in 1845 that fought pirates on the coast of West Africa and served during the Crimea War in 1855. A Royal Marine Private like Harris would have been kept quite busy during the conflict. CONDITION: Good overall. (B) Baltic Medal privately engraved to "EDMOND. BASSETT. NILE.". This serviceman does not immediately appear in the records, more research is needed. CONDITION: Nice patina, good overall. (C) Baltic Medal impressed with heavy square sans-serif capitals to "75 Co Hy Dimmick R.M.L.I. (in Gothic script) H.M.S. Cornwallis". According to an accompanying document, Dimmick's Baltic Medal is confirmed on the rolls of the HMS Cornwallis. CONDITION: Ribbon exhibits fading. Good overall. (D) Unnamed Baltic Medal. CONDITION: Light wear, good overall.
