The Crimea Medal is a campaign medal that was issued to officers and men of British land and naval units who fought in the Crimean War of 1854–56 against Russia. Crimea Medals were issued unnamed but could be returned to the mint for naming. The returned medals were usually impressed with serif capitals, and this style is often termed and accepted as "officially impressed." The lot consists of: (A) Crimea Medal officially impressed in serif capitals to recipient "GR & DR JOHN TURNER, RL ARTY". Turner does not immediately show up in the records, however, the Royal Artillery was quite active throughout the conflict. The medal displays the Sebastopol, Inkermann, and Alma clasps. CONDITION: Light wear and fading to ribbon, good overall. (B) Crimea Medal officially impressed in serif capitals to recipient "G. HADLEY. 77TH REGT." Hadley does not immediately show up in the records, however, the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot landed at Scutari in April 1854 and saw action at the Battle of Alma, the Battle of Inkerman, and at the siege of Sevastopol with 2 members awarded the Victoria Cross. This example features 3 clasps that reflect the regiments service. CONDITION: Light patina, very good overall.
