The Crimea Medal is a campaign medal that was issued to officers and men of British land and naval units who fought in the Crimean War of 1854–56 against Russia. This Crimea medals were issued unnamed but could be returned to the mint for naming. The returned medals were usually impressed with serif capitals, and this style is often termed and accepted as "officially impressed." This Crimea Medal is regimental or "depot" style impressed with large thin capitals "SERGT. J. MORRIS 21ST R.N.B.F.". There are several men with the name "J. Morris" listed in the 21st Royal North British Fusiliers. The regiment landed in Crimea and fought at the Battles of Alma and Inkerman, where it was much distinguished and suffered heavy losses. The regiment then served throughout the siege of Sevastopol, including the assault on the Redan and in reserve for the second assault. The regiment was also present at the assault and capture of Kinburn, returning to Crimea in November 1855. In June 1856, the 21st embarked from Balaclava for Malta. CONDITION: Light wear, good overall.
