A nicely mounted British medal group named to Lance Corporal James McRitchie who served with the 2nd Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). McRitchie was a native of Scotland and was part of the Royal Honor Guard at the 1911 Delhi Durbar when the King Emperor visited India. He served in France and Flanders during World War I with the 1st Battalion Black Watch in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the British Expeditionary Force. McRitchie is listed as wounded on 23 November 1914 and was later reported missing on 22 May, 1915. He was later declared to be killed in action on 9 May 1915. The young Lance Corporal was killed during Aubers Ridge during a series of unsuccessful attacks on German positions at Rue de Bois, where the Black Watch suffered heavy casualties including 14 officers and 461 other personnel. McRitchie is noted to have no known grave and he remains missing in action. The group consists of his 1914 Star, named on the reverse "1071 / PTE J. McRITCHIE. / 2/R. HIGHRS", War Medal impressed "1071 PTE. J. MCRITCHIE. R. HIGHRS.", Victory Medal (unnamed), and Delhi Durbar Medal 1911 named "1071 PTE. J. MCRITCHIE R.H.". Copies of records included. CONDITION: The medals exhibit a light patina but present well. Very good overall.
