The Sutlej Medal was a campaign awarded to officers and men of the Army of the Sutlej who to part in the First Sikh War. The India General Service Medal (1854) was a campaign medal awarded to officers and men of the British and Indian armies for various minor military campaigns in India and nearby countries, between 1852-1895. The medals are both impressed in serif capitals "ISRAEL HINTON 80TH REGT". Israel Hinton was born at All Saint, Lincolnshire and spent his youth as a laborer. He enlisted in the British Army on March 2, 1840 and served in the 80th Regiment Of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers). In 1844, the regiment sailed for India and arrived in just as the First Anglo-Sikh War broke out. They fought at the Battles of Mudki and Ferozeshah in December 1845 and the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846. The regiment was then stationed in Lahore from 1846-1852, in that year Hinton and the rest of the 80th Foot fought in the Second Anglo-Burmese War which saw the East India company annex the province of Pegu. Hinton died of wounds received in action at Amhurst on June 24, 1852 after serving 12 years in the army. The regiment returned to India in 1853 and sailed back to the United Kingdom in the following year. Hinton had almost made it home. Hinton's India General Service Medal (1854) displays the Sobraon and Ferozeshuhur and his Sutlej Campaign Medal displays the Pegu clasp. According to accompanying research, both the medals and clasps are verified. CONDITION: Medals display light wear and patina. Good overall.
