After the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company dissolved in 1857, Oliver Winchester reorganized production under the New Haven Arms name. One of approximately 1,000 carbines produced by the company, this early 16" No. 2 carbine serial number 60 was made shortly after production resumed. It features a 16 - 1/2" type I fluted barrel chambered for . 41 Rocket Ball self contained cartridges. German silver blade front sight and elevation adjustable v-notch rear. The silver plated brass receiver is engraved in the characteristic style with large, loose foliates and dot borders. The smooth straight grip walnut stock is fit with an engraved silver plated brass crescent butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall. The barrel shows some evidence of cleaned, older oxidation, appears to have been lightly struck with a file, and an overall dove gray patina with some light artificial aging. Barrel address and patent information are faint. The receiver exhibits a wonderful mellow mustard patina with a few faint traces of silver, the buttplate retaining significantly more of its plating. The butt stock shows some scattered marks, remaining very good overall. Very fine mirror bore retaining strong rifling throughout. Especially fine mechanics indicating little period use. Matching "60" observed on the tang, stock, buttplate, and buttplate screws; the bolt numbered "116".
