World War II US Army Air Forces (USAAF) Type A-2 flight jacket. Correct A-2 configuration with collar snaps and 2 front pockets with button snaps. The jacket features a square 7" x 6 - 1/2" leather 42nd Bomb Group squadron patch which is constructed of leather and affixed to the jacket by adhesive. A leather name strip with the name "J.H. DAUGHERTY" impressed in the leather. Captain's bars on each epaulette. The back is adorned with a painted rendition of a B-25J Mitchell which was one of the primary aircraft the 42nd BG operated out of the Pacific Theater of Operations. The artwork on the back is nicely detailed, with the B-25 correctly camouflaged and the plexiglass positions depicting the silhouettes of crew members. The guns are detailed with red strokes and the propellers appear to be spinning. The 42nd BG logo is painted on the tail. Interestingly, the B-25 appears to have 2 top turrets, as it appears the artist attempted to paint an earlier B-25C but corrected the position of the turret to just behind the cockpit to reflect a B-25J. CONDITION: The leather exhibits scattered areas of flaking and cracking, especially on the sleeves. There are holes in the left sleeve which were professionally patched. Waistband is original with scattered holes and pulls, while cuffs are period replacements and exhibit wear. Squadron patch is separating at the corners. Original talon zipper remains on the jacket but there are breaks in the chain. Original liner remains in the jacket but was damaged and reinforced around the shoulders. Liner exhibits tears, especially around the sleeves. A worn jacket with nice artwork and still very displayable.
