Exquisite original percussion Kentucky longrifle made by master maker John Armstrong of Emmitsburg, Maryland circa 1835. This gun is 1 of 4 known original percussion Armstrong rifles. 58" overall length with 41".40 caliber rifled octagonal barrel with German silver blade front sight, rear notch sight, and barrel signed on brass inlaid plate "JOHN ARMSTRONG". Handmade percussion lock signed in script "J A" for John Armstrong, with floral shaped percussion hammer and double set triggers. Relief-carved full length curly maple stock with brass hardware including engraved a 4 piece patchbox with 3 piercings, side "Pinwheel" finials, typical Armstrong floral finial, and push button release in toeplate. Stock also has 12 engraved silver inlays including an inlay above cheekpiece with a detailed eagle, as well as the signature Armstrong heart inlays on both sides of wrist. All hardware, with the exception of nosecap and 2 ramrod ferrules, has some form of floral engraving. Stock is magnificently carved in the Armstong style with strawberry vine floral relief carving behind cheek, typical checkered pattern under cheek, floral wrist, tang, and tailpipe carving, with gadroon pattern in front of lock and lockplate. Brass flat barrel keys with engraved silver escutcheon plates. Comes with hardwood ramrod. PROVENANCE: Joseph Kindig Collection. CONDITION: Overall good with some light surface frosting to metal, turning a plum patina. Brass retains a pleasing soft mustard patina. Wood has generous traces of original finish with no major damage except a minor untouched chip/crack behind lock. Good bore with visible rifling. Mechanism is strong and functions well. A super condition, ornate and rare signed Armstrong Kentucky rifle.
