According to the Colt factory letter, this gun was shipped November 27, 1895 to Simmons Hardware Company St. Louis, Missouri in a shipment of 10 guns. It was sent out as a .44-40 with a 4 - 3/4" barrel, blue finish, and rubber grips. Also included in the letter under Remarks: The records also contain a second listing for this serial number that indicates it was a .44/40 caliber with a 5 1/2" barrel and nickel finish. The stocks were not listed. This revolver was included in a shipment of 3 guns to Simmons Hardware Company on December 11, 1895. Now it is a .38-40 with a 4 -3/4" barrel that is post factory engraved (possibly done with barrel and caliber change by unknown professional gunsmith) with 1-piece ivory grips. The gun has about 90% coverage of unknown age scroll and foliate engraving with a punch dot background. 1-piece ivory grip. The grip is a little shy to the backstrap. The front sight has been modified to improve accuracy and action tuned and test fired by professional Colt gunsmith Bill Fuch at Spring Creek Armory and the trigger guard looks to be renumbered. CONDITION: Gun is mostly a gun metal gray with some applied finish added. Dark bore with some pitting in the lands and grooves. Grips are smooth with some aging. The gun locks up tight, indexes fine, and has all four clicks on the hammer. Would make an excellent shooter for the cowboy action or target enthusiast.
