Approximately 800 of these large .40 caliber dragoon size percussion revolvers were produced circa 1850 to 1851. This example is fitted with a scarcely encountered 6 - 1/4" barrel with brass blade front sight and top strap marked with 2-line "MASS. ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS" address. Barrel catch also marked with standard "1850" patent date. The 6-shot cylinder marked on the reverse with Leavitt's patent and decorated with desirable etched floral and crossed cannon motifs. Foliate scroll engraving extends onto the side hammer, with the lock plate marked "WESSON'S AND LEAVITT'S PATENT". Grips are standard 1-piece smooth walnut. CONDITION: Overall good displaying a mottled silvery gray patina throughout. A small spot of weld and an area of chemical aging present on the top strap, with address marking light. Significant portions of the cylinder etching are visible, with areas partially obscured by cleaned, older oxidation. The brass trigger guard displays an attractive mellowing patina. Grips are very good showing some expected wear and impressions. Bore retains defined rifling with some areas of black powder pitting. Action indexes correctly. Matching "261" serial number observed on major components, excluding the barrel lug which is numbered "306". A scarce early Colt competitor with desirable features.
