Circa 1893. A vintage and nicely refurbished 12 bore game gun with 29" chopper lump barrels and ejectors. Narrow swamped concave rib engraved "James Purdey and Sons" with South Audley Street London address and Whitworth steel information. Breech end of rib is engraved with “2”, which is also engraved on top lever and internal forend iron. Muzzle end of rib fit with a round steel bead. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs and reproofs for 2 - 1/2" nitro proof chambers. Chokes are Modified in left barrel and Skeet in right. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial number 14642. The case hardened Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action is fit with automatic safety "SAFE" in gold, bushed strikers, arrow engraved cocking indicators, and double triggers. Gun is built with auto-safe. Action and lockplates are engraved in classic Purdey house style rose and scroll, which is exceptionally well cut, and most likely done by Purdey head engraver, James Lucas. Blued trigger guard has serial number on long bottom strap. Beautifully marbled and figured European walnut straight grip stock is finished with a checkered butt. Stock features classic drop points and point pattern checkering. The stocks belly is fit with a large vacant gold oval. Matching splinter ejector forend with blued, engraved Anson push button release. Lovely gun lives is a vintage oak and leather makers case with brass corners, snap caps, cleaning accessories, straps for case, paper labels and black and gold leather James Purdey and Sons trade label. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain 98% reblued finish. Slight bit of case rub on left barrel near breech. Action is sound with good triggers and ejectors. Stock is excellent. Forend is also very good. Case leather is dark with a number of scuffs, mostly on edges, some light marks. Renewed interior felt is excellent. Very nice gun.
