Standard configuration K98 manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sohn in prior to World War II. The receiver is stamped with Sauer's clandestine manufacturer code "S/147", above the year of manufacture "1936". Right side of receiver bears an "(Eagle)/ 116" waffenamt, followed by 2 "(Eagle)/ 214" waffenamts. Droop eagle firing proof is present on the left side of the receiver and barrel. Right side of buttstock bears an "(Eagle)/ H" proof above several more Sauer waffenamts, indicating issue to the Heer, with the underside of the wrist bearing what appears to be a partially discernible "WaA4" waffenamt. Interior of stock bears an unusual stamp preceding the serial number in the barrel channel, appears to be an "II" overstamped by a "W". Metal components appear to be reblued, possibly an arsenal refinish during the period. Stock and handguard are comprised of solid walnut. Nearly all numbers are matching and include the receiver, sear, barrel, rear sight assembly, barrel bands, barrel band spring, front sight blade, floorplate, follower, trigger guard, trigger guard/receiver screws, bolt, extractor, bolt shroud, safety, cocking piece, stock (exterior & interior), handguard, buttplate, as well as the steel sight/muzzle cover. Bolt stop has been over-stamped to match. Rifle is mounted with a proper period brown leather sling. CONDITION: Metal components retain large amounts of their period blue finish, exhibiting spots and areas of wear and thinning that show through to pleasant brown and gray patinas. Mirror bore, exhibiting sharp and well defined lands and grooves throughout. Stock and handguard are excellent, appearing to have been lightly sanded and revarnished at one time. A nice pre-war example of a J.P. Sauer K98.
