Manufactured in early 1875, this carbine serial number 37836 is within the generally accepted range (under 50000) which could have been issued to Custer's 7th Cavalry prior to the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn. 2 other carbines in the 37000 serial number range, 37178 and 37225, are listed by John S. du Monte in "Custer Battle Guns" as having been turned in by Captain Henry Jackson of the 7th Cavalry. This standard early production Model 1873 carbine is fit with a correctly unproofed 22" barrel chambered in .45-70 with blade front sight and early style unmarked carbine ladder rear sight. High arch breech block marked "MODEL / 1873 / (eagle head with crossed arrows) / US". Lock with 3 click tumbler and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" markings. Stocked in walnut with stampings including an obscured cartouche, encircled "P" firing proof, and "4" rack number. Mounts include a single barrel band with stacking swivel, saddle ring and bar, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" carbine butt plate without trap. CONDITION: Very good overall. Finished have largely turned to a pleasing plum-brown patina with some evidence of cleaned, light oxidation in areas. Stock is solid, showing some expected bumps and bruises in addition to an unfilled hole in the wrist, likely from a sling swivel. Strong, bright bore. Mechanically fine. A nice honest carbine with tantalizing possible Indian Wars history.
