Oval bronze struck medal with obverse depicting a bust of Chester Arthur with "CHESTER A. ARTHUR / PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES / 1881". These medals were presented to American Indian Chiefs in silver, and in bronzed copper for others of lesser prominence. Reverse depicts settler and Native American in front of a log cabin and farm scene with wreath encircling crossed peace pipe and tomahawk below exergual line. Reverse reads "PEACE" above scene. The obverse is marked below bust truncation at left "C.E. BARBER F.". Reverse is marked on exergual line at right "M". Rim thickness measures .228", length, 2.974", width 2.342". Records show that Garfield medals were still being presented to the Indians as late as 1884. This is considered one of the rarer peace medals to obtain.
