Originally commissioned by Commander John Dahlgren for the Navy, 10,000 rifles were ordered from Whitney in 1861 and were delivered by 1864. This early example is numbered "637" on the tang and bears "W" inspector marking for Frank Warner at the breech with an additional stamped "15" rack number. Standard 34" bright .69 caliber rifled barrel mounted with blade front sight and long range rear. The rear sight is not graduated and is missing the elevator. The percussion lock is marked with a large eagle with flag, "U.S. / WHITNEY-VILLE", and "1862" date. Stocked in black walnut with bright steel mounts including cap, barrel band, finger stud trigger guard, rear sling swivel, and "US" butt plate. Complete with a correct but somewhat poorly fitting Collins & Co. saber bayonet numbered "836" with leather scabbard and frog. CONDITION: Fine. Metal is largely bright with freckling throughout and a few spots of patina. Stock is dark, showing some impressions and a 2 - 1/2" split extending from the front of the lock plate. Bore is fine with strong rifling. Mechanically fine. Bayonet is very good with a some light cleaned oxidation on the ricasso. Scabbard is solid, with the frog showing some flaking.
