Number 88428, manufactured in the second quarter of 1878. Springfield Research lists 10 trapdoor carbines in the 88,000 range around this carbine as in use by the infamous 7th Cavalry in the 1880s, including 88422, just a few numbers off. After Custer's defeat at Little Big Horn, the 7th Cavalry saw further service in the Crow War, Ghost Dance War, and Wounded Knee. This carbine has a standard blued 22" "V / P / (eagle head)" proofed barrel with blade front sight and "C" marked carbine rear sight. The low arch breech block is marked "US / MODEL / 1873". Lock with 3-position tumbler and standard "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" markings. Fit with a 1-piece walnut 1877 style stock marked with a faint oval cartouche, an encircled "P" firing proof, and a "33" rack number. Mounts include barrel band with stacking swivel, saddle ring and bar, 2-piece trigger guard, and trap butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel finish has drifted to a rich plum, with the breech block exhibiting a silvery patina. The stock has a cleaned, dry appearance with some scattered marks. Bore retains strong rifling with some light spots of black powder pitting. Crisp mechanics. A nice carbine that very well could have seen service in the West during the Indian Wars.
