Napoleonic dirk with 11" blade with single fuller that runs for nearly the whole length of the blade. Blade is acid etched on both sides with patriotic designs including stands of arms, floral scroll, and an unidentified heraldric shield with 7 fleur-de-lis on the shield, surmounted by a visored helmet with a crown, and a hanging Maltese cross. An additional Maltese cross is at ricasso. Half shell guard with a punched dot and pierced about the border with an applied rose gold crown surmounted by flags. Bone grip with double braided brass wire wrap and a fishform head with scales on the spine. Scabbard with repousse designs of floral scroll and shell motifs, with a central gold device (rose gold?) with an inset diamond and rubies (?). 2 suspension rings. Chain guard with striated rings, individually soldered. Back of scabbard is engraved "DUDLEY / Grand Parade / PORTSMOUTH"; Dudley was a well known cutler in England in the 19th century. CONDITION: Overall very good. Significant areas of gilt retained in protected areas. Visible solder marks from construction throughout. Right side of crown on guard slightly marred. Blade is very good with a mottled dove grey appearance, slightly brighter towards tip. Grip has 1 chip under fish mouth. An attractive example.
