Built by Springfield Armory in 1866 with a trapdoor beech designed by Master Armorer Erskine Allin with leftover M1863 musket parts. This example has a shortened 29" barrel sleeved to a .50 centerfire chambering with eagle head proof visible at breech. Blade front sight and 2-leaf rear sight. Lock plate dated "1864" with "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" and federal eagle markings ahead of cock. Plain walnut stock mounted with steel nose cap, 2-spring retained "U" marked bands, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" marked butt plate. Stock embossed "8024" near butt. These shortened 2-band rifles were converted as surplus by private companies to sell as cadet rifles. CONDITION: Good as converted. Metal components exhibits a dark patina with some added finish. Stock has some scattered impressions and a split along the comb. Fair bore with some pitting. Good mechanics.
