Late 1850s Gold Rush era clip point Sheffield Bowie knife with German silver cross guard. Ricasso marked: "GEORGE / BUSTEED & CO / HOPEWORKS". Etched single blade panel with American Eagle holding $10,000 bag of gold in its beak, Above the motto: "I CAN DIG GOLD FROM QUARTZ" / "CALIFORNIAN BOWIE KNIFE" / along with: "A CALIFORNIAN ASKS FOR NOTHING BUT WHAT IS RIGHT AND SUBMIT TO NOTHING THAT IS WRONG." Original leather scabbard is tipped with German silver throat and drag. CONDITION: Some light stains to blade with some fading to the etched panel. Cutting edge is nice with no nicks. Scabbard shows heavy flaking but is solid and fits knife.
