Nice example of a mid-19th century belt knife. These were very popular personal weapons from the Mexican to Civil War timeframe. Ricasso marked "C. WILSON SWIFT/ BROAD STREET/SHEFFIELD" and "D.C.L." on the obverse. Blade measures 9” and is 1 - 1/8” at its widest point, with on overall knife length of 13 - 7/8”. Features ornate German silver cross guard and pommel with Mexican eagle and snake motif. Slab grips are of polished hardwood with a silver escutcheon on one side. CONDITION: Blade shows age appropriate wear and shows scattered mossing overall but retains a nice tip and edges free of nicks. A solid example.
