Manufactured in 1885. Standard issue 32 - 5/8" blued barrel with "V / P / (Eagle Head)" proof chambered for .45-70 and fitted with "R" marked Buffington rear sight. Low arch breech block marked "US / MODEL / 1873". Lock side plate marked with federal eagle and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873". Full length walnut stock mounted with 2 spring retained barrel bands, 2-piece trigger guard, and a "US" marked butt plate. Stock marked with an illegible cartouche and "205" marking near breech. Standard encircled "P" proof and a "18" rack number are found at wrist. Stock comb also stamped with "18" and a "VC53" unit marking. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components have turned to an honest dark patina with some areas of cleaned oxidation. Stock is lightly sanded, still showing some period bruises. Markings are faint. Very good bore displaying well defined rifling. Fine mechanics.
