Gold Rush (1847 -1850s) era stag handled Bowie knife. Measures nearly a foot long with a 7" clip blade with false edge. Handle is made of 1-piece curved stag with a brass cross guard. Handle culminates to a brass pommel cap. Blade is marked just under spine on left hand of blade flat: “Chevalier’s California Knife / J.D. Chevalier / New-York”. Leather sheath might be original but has a rawhide replaced tip in place of the original sheet brass one. Flayderman notes that the only American knife maker that took advantage of the migration to the western Gold Fields was Chevalier prior to the San Francisco market that began in 1854. CONDITION: Blade is in good condition, with moderate patches of pitting. Decent tip.
