Circa 1875-1890 western style pipe tomahawk with cast pewter head. Haft is heavily file branded and has 124 brass tacks; drilled and has been heavily smoked. Head has on oval eye and is profusely rocker engraved with geometric designs on both sides. Measures 17 - 1/2" overall with a 9" head that flares to a 3" cutting surface. Pewter tomahawks are very soft and the survival rate is low. This lack of durability made pewter tomahawks serve for more ceremonial purposes. CONDITION: Wood haft shows a nice warm patina and tacks have never been polished. Pewter head is loose to haft and shows age commensurate wears and dings to body and cutting edge.
