Adapted from the Type 38 infantry rifle, the Type 97 proved particularly effective against US Marines during the Second World War both, especially in terms of psychological warfare, as, due to the barrel length and the 6.5x50mmSR Arisaka ammunition, little muzzle flash or smoke was produced, making troop advancement and counter-sniping particularly difficult. This example is stamped with the Nagoya arsenal insignia on the left side of the receiver above a Series I proof and the serial number. The serial number appears to exhibit a factory error, with the 1st and 2nd digits applied over a previous number. Chrysanthemum is mildly defaced, with 2 strikes through its center, and is stamped above Kanji characters denoting the model designation. The left side of the receiver is mounted with a proper Type 97 2.5x scope (Serial Number: 10586). Metal components are blued, while the stock and handguard are standard beechwood. Handguard has been revarnished and is a replacement. Matching numbers are present on the receiver as well as the bolt body. CONDITION: Metal components retain large amounts of their original arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some cleaned areas of oxidation and some areas of wear and thinning that show through to pleasant gray and brown patinas. Mirror bore, exhibiting well-defined rifling throughout. The stock exhibits scattered nicks, dings, and marks overall, with the left side exhibiting several larger impressions just below the scope mount. Scope exhibits superficial exterior wear. The optic is clear and sharp, showing some minor freckling.
