An interesting lot of relics recovered from the wreck site of the famous Spanish Treasure fleet, which was lost in a hurricane along the east coast of Florida in 1715. The lot consists of 2 pieces of bar shot, at least 9 cannon balls, and a cluster of silver coins, all purchased during the Parke-Bernet Galleries February 4, 1967 public auction for the items recovered from the wreck site. A copy of the original catalog and original receipts are also included with the lot. The receipts mention most of the items listed, and all of the pieces were collected and kept by Dr. John K. Lattimer. Also included is a letter that states that the relics were recovered from the HMS Hampton Court. The Spanish captured the ship on May 2, 1707, and she met her demise as a flagship of the 1715 Treasure Fleet. There is also a newspaper and notes Lattimer kept regarding the auction that will be included as paperwork. The relics are in the condition of items that were recovered from the sea floor, and many are encrusted with decades of rust from their prolonged resting place. The pieces were stored in boxes at the Lattimer household and have since deteriorated over the years, with the bottom of the box lined with fragments of the recovered pieces. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful offering of relics from a famed treasure fleet which were then stored in an equally famous collection. CONDITION: Relic.
