January 9, 1863 letter docketed by Lincoln on reverse: "Submitted to the Sec. of War. A. Lincoln Jan. 21. 1863." Letter is a recommendation addressed to Lincoln for the appointment of Frank H. Hamilton as Medical Inspector General, signed by Valentine Mott and four other prominent New York surgeons. Hamilton was appointed a Medical Inspector with the rank of Lt. Colonel, but apparently lost out to Joseph Barnes for the post of Medical Inspector General. Accompanied by JSA letter of authenticity. Ex. Lattimer collection. CONDITION: Excellent.
