Sept. 9, 1957 typewritten letter datelined from Taipei, Taiwan, on "Office of the President Republic of China" letterhead to Dr. Daniel Poling of New York, signed in ink at bottom by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek (Mayling Soong Chiang.) Letter welcomes his coming visit and offers to arrange a trip to off-shore islands. Born in 1897 and educated in the U.S., she was a powerful and effective advocate for her husband's anti-communist policies, support for China in the Sino-Japanese war, and later the nationalist government in Taiwan until her death in 2003. Poling is likely Rev. Dr. Daniel A. Poling, 1884-1968, a conservative clergyman, publisher of the Christian Herald, and occasional political candidate. He did charitable work in China in the 1930s. He rebuked a conference of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in U.S.A. for suggesting US recognition of communist China in 1958. JSA Letter of authenticity. CONDITION: Very Good. Short tear on bottom left edge.
