Quite an intriguing letter signed by American Showman Phineas T. Barnum. The letter is dated June 21, 1853, and was written to Dr. John W. Francis, who was an eminent Obstetrician and founder of the New York Academy of Medicine. The letter reads "Will you have the goodness to send by bearer or forward me here any time today, anything you may think proper to write and sign in relation to the 'Bearded Lady'". The envelope that accompanies this letter is addressed to Dr. Francis. Barnum was being sued by a customer who thought the "Bearded Lady" was a hoax and, in truth, was a man. To prove his case in court, Barnum hired 3 physicians, Dr. Valentine Mott, Dr. Alexander D. Mott, and Dr. Francis. They certified, after their examinations, that the "Bearded Lady" was indeed a female and her beard was "natural." Clearly this was a notable Barnum triumph in the showman's career and one of his most famous, if not the most famous, acts. A great letter with interesting subject matter. The signature was authenticated and is accompanied by a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity. This letter is former Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection, who was known to collect medical related memorabilia. The letter exhibits fold lines with light blemishes. Envelope has yellowed. Clear writing and signature. CONDITION: Good.
